Artist Biography

Ruby Cascarina (b.2004) is an emerging artist living and working in Hertfordshire, England. She works predominantly in oils, painting scenes that explore existential themes and the fluctuating perceived scale of individual significance. Influenced by the aesthetic sublime of the Romantic period, her work is concerned with exaggerating light and colour within the natural world.

During my degree my painting practice became a pursuit of visually representing a feeling. Particularly as I approached the end of my studies, with no planned next steps, existential thoughts about purpose settled in. Sometimes through angst and sometimes through optimism I often compared individual scale to the expanse of the world; how tiny and insignificant we each are, and how freeing that is. I discovered that this thought had been researched and written about for centuries, known as the sublime. A key concept in the study of the sublime is the awe and wonder elicited by nature so I painted imagined landscapes that exaggerated the natural world.
Since leaving university my practice has continued to develop the same themes through similar imagery, emphasising contrast and a sense of light. Instead of painting scenes from my imagination I have started to reference nature as it is, amplifying sights seen on local walks. Another process I have developed since leaving university is abstracting works made centuries before me. It was a comfort when I learned that my existential anxieties had been experienced and theorised by many before me, and so reinterpreting old works feels like a way of preserving ideas that are fundamental and move with us through different contexts.
